this project brief asked for a unique 4-5 bedroom family dwelling with a granny annexe. conrad developed the design very much from the site constraints: the site was located in the middle of a victorian square in a conservation area and was formerly occupied by a print works consisting of single storey outbuildings. the new proposal was restricted to the roof height of the existing buildings and therefore, in order to provide the required floor area, the building was designed part sub-terranian. this also reduced the perceived mass of the dwelling to the surrounding neighbours. the siting on the plot resulted from not only needing to maximise natural light and ventilation but also the requirement to ensure the best layout for the external space available.
